ROUND THE ISLAND RELAY 2006

Event Date:
Saturday August 19th and Sunday August 20th, 2006

Event Info:
The Bermuda Masters Swimming Association is pleased to announce the successful completion of the first ever Round-The-Island Relay Swim. This fund-raising event marked the 30th anniversary of Sean O'Connell's solo Round-The-Island swim in 1976. The event started on Saturday August 19th at 7:00am and continued for 11 hours, then resumed on Sunday August 20th at 7:00am finally finishing at 9 Beaches after 21 hours of swimming. The swim was comprised of 20 legs, starting and finishing at the 9 Beaches resort, and travelled in a clockwise manner around the whole island.

A minimum of 2 to a maximum of 10 swimmers of similar ability took part on each leg. Most transitions occurred at a dock or beach but the transitions at St. David’s Head and Hungry Bay occurred off the support boat. Continuous boat support was provided and ensured the safety of all swimmers.

The event raised $30,000 in aid of the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association (registered charity # 88), the same charity Sean O'Connell championed back in 1976. Money donated will be used for the transportation needs of the disabled, including ancillary equipment and maintenance.

Route:
On Day One we set off from 9 Beaches and headed east along the North Shore and around the East End to Tucker's Town. Day Two started at Mid-Ocean Club Long Beach and we made our way west along South Shore and around the West End to finish back at the start at 9 Beaches.
